Event – Summer School Finland, 10-22 August 2009

The 15th YTK/IFHP Urban Planning and Design Summer School was held in Finland 10-22 August 2009. This course is annually organised by the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (YTK) at the Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) in cooperation with IFHP. This edition brought together 19 nationalities with backgrounds from architecture to urban planning and social sciences making the course multi-disciplinary.

Mapping urban space

The theme of this year’s course was “Mapping urban space”: Alternative Strategies for Emergent Urban Forms.

The Summer School explored alternative mappings in all scales but also addressed the question of making the alternative mapping operational. In Turku the students concentrated on finding hidden potential of urban space. The task was to look for under-used spaces in the city centre and propose new temporary or more permanent uses for the upcoming European Capital of Culture year 2011. In Jyväskylä participants created plans for a mixed-use area 7 kilometres from the city centre. The idea was to create good plan on a local scale and also consider the challenging regional level.

Practice

As in the previous years, the best ideas of the projects were discussed and will be applied into practise when the planning of the project areas begins in the workshop cities.

The Summer School provides the participants with an opportunity to get their writings published in an official publication. The first half of the annual report consists of articles and essays written by the participants. This chapter outlines the theme of the course from a theoretical point of view. The second part of the report presents summaries of the projects produced in the workshops.

Edition 2007 is available as download (21 Mb).
Edition 2008 will be available in October 2009.
Edition 2009 will be available January 2010.

Edition 2010

The preparations of the Summer School 2010 are already well under way. The concept of the course will remain essentially the same. However, the partner cities will be different. Vantaa and Rauma will most probably host the workshops of summer school 2010.
