Present-Day Urban Public Spaces
The IFHP Working Party Present-day Urban Public Spaces was put together based on a paper which was discussed and approved by various supporters at a meeting held in Rome on 31 May-1 June, 1996.
AIMS
The IFHP Working Party Present-day Urban Public Spaces focuses on multidisciplinary consideration of spaces intended for socialisation in the contemporary city. It considers over a number of years the theme of public space and the city, analysing and defining the role and the importance of all forms and present manifestations of urban space which stimulate social activity and direct contacts, at all levels.
The Working Party wishes to concentrate on two complementary aspects:
- presenting a wide range of approaches and concepts
- considering case studies and concrete experience in detail.
There are three themes being considered in detail: the urban plan, management and the social aspect of the use of public spaces. The Working Party is divided into local groups who study the various aspects on a local level. The results of these studies will be published into a report to be used in planning spaces.

1996 - SENDAI, JAPAN
Workshop at the occasion of the IFHP World Congress in Sendai, Japan.
A special report was made on behalf of this meeting.
1997 - GÖTEBORG, SWEDEN
Workshop at the occasion of the IFHP International Congress in Göteborg
27 September-2 October 1997.
1997 - ROME, Italy
International workshop initiated by the Working Party at the Faculty of Engineering, University "La Sapienza", Rome, Italy.
Theme: Today's Urban Public Spaces, divided in three sub-themes:
- Public Space and Urban Planning
- Urban Design and New Subjectivity
- Metropolitan Spaces: Direction for Use
1998 - LISBON, PORTUGAL
Workshop at the occasion of the 44th IFHP World Congress.
1999 - GLASGOW, SCOTLAND (UK)
Workshop at the occasion of the IFHP international Congress in Glasgow. The work of each local group was put together and discussed.
2000 - Rotterdam, the Netherlands
Workshop at the occasion of the 45th IFHP World Congress.
Themes: The Urban Plan, Management of Public Space and the Social Aspect of Public Space.
2001 - Barcelona, Spain
Workshop at the occasion of the IFHP International Congress.
Report on 7 study cases available at the IFHP Secretariat.
2002 - TIANJIN, CHINA
Workshop at the occasion of the 46th World Congress, on 11 September
2003 - VIENNA, AUSTRIA
