Working Party on Housing and Urban Settlements
Lisbon, 5-7 May 2007 - 4th Meeting of the Working Party on Housing and Urban Settlements.
Held in Lisbon, this meeting was organized and hosted by GEBALIS, E.M. – Gestão dos Bairros Municipais de Lisboa. GEBALIS is a Municipal Enterprise with juridical and financial autonomy, responsible for managing the social housing in Lisbon since 1995. The event registered a participation of 29 people.
The study visits inside Lisbon’s metropolitan area looked at a recent 300ha urbanization plan - 'Alta de Lisboa'; one of the suburbs of Lisbon: 'Municipality of Amadora', and also visit the World heritage patrimony of Sintra.
This meeting focused on three debates:
- “Crowded and empty houses (and how to change them)”;
- “The cities as an “all” vs. the city as several cities – does housing have an effect”;
- “The National Policies for the Urban Settlements in Portugal”
There was a whole range of presentations, including the explanation of several public and private initiatives to deliver renewed lodging in the historical centre as a way to counter balance the 30year city exodus. Insights into Sweden and Lisbon case studies rethinking the inclusive city and social mixing policies, and sustainable housing/sustainable cities.
