Summer School 2008 Finland, 11-23 August 2008
Regenerating Urban Core.
The Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (YTK) at the Helsinki University of Technology is hosting the fourteenth edition of the YTK/IFHP Summer School in Finland. YTK started this programme in 1995 under the auspices of IFHP.
The first part of the Summer School takes place in Helsinki and consists of lectures on the theme of the course and Finish planning, architecture and culture. The second part takes place in the form of workshops and planning projects in the cities Turku and Jyväskylä.
The fieldwork includes analysing the existing conditions of the planning areas and suggesting improvements tot the environments. The proposals will be presented tot the cities' aythorities, the general public and the press.
Theme
City regions are expanding. Also in the traditionally urban Europe, both housing areas and new commercial and office centres are built further and further away from the historical city centres. The developments towards poly-nucleated region and network city challenge the traditional role of urban cores. They are drawn into competition for residents, tourists, consumers and businesses – not only between regions but also inside them.
