World Congress Berlin, 5-9 September 2009

Urban Technology: Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.

For the sixth time in the history of IFHP, Berlin will host an IFHP congress. The theme of this 53rd World Congress will be: Urban Technologies for Urban Sustainability. The dates are 6th – 9th September 2009.

Theme

Cities are constantly changing - expanding and contracting, adapting to new developments and challenges. Faced now with the mega-challenges of adapting to climate change, saving energy, congestion, waste and drinking water management, this process of change will probably get more intensive. Much has been discussed on the policy side of dealing with such issues, but IFHP wants to focus attention on the possibilities offered by new technologies. The 53rd World Congress will above all create a forum for companies involved in new urban technologies to present their innovations, but also for local governments to show how they are applying these new technologies in their own cities.

Programme

The preliminary outline programme is as follows:

  • September 5th - Meeting of the relevant IFHP bodies (Bureau, Council, Members Meeting)
  • September 6th – City tour, opening ceremony, results of the student competition and Young Planners Award
  • September 7th – Presentations and discussions in plenary and workshop sessions
  • September 8th – Continuation starting with a young planners debate and ending with a final plenary  closing session
  • September 9th - Thematic City tours
  • September 10th & 11th: Possibility for post congress excursions
