UPDATE: Read our reflections on the C40 Mayors Summit 2016 here
The Mayors Summit will take place exactly one year after the COP21 climate talks in Paris and the Climate Summit for Local Leaders, where over 1,000 mayors and community leaders committed to concrete actions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and tracking their progress in tackling climate change.
The C40 Mayors Summit will bring together C40 mayors from all over the world and hundreds of urban and sustainability leaders to advance urban solutions to climate change and highlight the leadership role of cities in addressing climate change. This is the world’s foremost global gathering of political, business and intellectual leaders.
Mayors, urban practitioners and technical experts will share successful projects, policies and programmes across a range of sectors and action areas, including building energy efficiency, low carbon transport, green growth and climate resilience.
The event will feature a series of roundtable discussions and working sessions on city driven climate actions and their impact; the discussions will be data-driven and outcome focused. This is why IFHP, being an implementation agent of the New Urban Agenda deems it important to be present to represent its comunity, influence the summit’s outcome and to bring home learnings and initiatives that will create housing for all.

IFHP's side events

IFHP will be hosting two side events during the C40 Mayors summit 2016:
This session will discuss the importance of urban governance and partnerships and will be the third discussion between Novo Nordisk, The International Federation of Housing and Planning (IFHP) and City Leaders. The first was conducted at Habitat III and the second at the IFHP Summit in Rotterdam 10th November 2016.

2. The climate action and quality of life nexus.
(Thursday 1 December 2016)
In this event, partners to Realdania use the occasion of C40’s Mayors Summit to discuss the opportunities, solutions and benefits to citizens in relation to integrating social aspects in city climate action. The focus will be on how Copenhagen has successfully applied a holistic approach to planning for climate change.

IFHP involved in the preparations

The International Federation for Housing and Planning has been involved in the lead-up to this summit: both CEO Anette Galskjøt and President Flemming Borreskov were present the Mayors Forum held in Singapore in July. The World Cities Summit Mayors Forum 2016 Report that was published afterwards, is available here. It summarises the discussions at the Forum and city presentations from the cities of Rotterdam, Zhuhai, Melbourne, Gifu and Manila.

C40 Cities Awards ceremony

The C40 Cities Awards ceremony, in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies and BYD Co Ltd., will be hosted on the evening of Thursday 1st December. Cities from around the world will be recognised for the outstanding performance and leadership they have demonstrated in tackling climate change in the fields of 10 categories.
Winners of the 2016 C40 Cities Awards – which recognizes excellence in urban sustainability – will be announced at a ceremony the evening of December 1.
