Seminar on Social Innovation for Refugee Inclusion

Date(s):
Monday 12.09.2016
Location:
EESC, Rue Belliard 99, 1000 Brussels

The IFHP will be represented by Huibert Haccou during the seminar on Social Innovation for Refugee Inclusion that will be held on Monday 12 September 2016 in Brussels.

The event is organised by The European Council on Refugees and Exiles (ECRE) and The United States Mission to the European Union in collaboration with the Council of Europe and the European Economic, the Social Committee (EESC), and the Mission of Canada to the European Union.

Mr. Haccou, Dutch council representative to the IFHP will present the 7 considerations to local, regional and national governments that the IFHP Housing Refugees lab developed last year. These considerations stipulate what to consider when housing and integrating refugees as a simultaneous effort.

About the seminar

Within a short time, a great number of people seeking refuge arrived in Europe. While this phenomenon has created a major political crisis, it has also awakened solidarity, creativity and a desire for change in our societies. Communities all over Europe have taken ownership of receiving and including newcomers.  Besides the traditional actors, initiatives and actions have emerged from citizens, cities, social entrepreneurs, universities, the tech community, and businesses, amongst many others. Social innovation has entered the asylum field.

Through five workshops, plenary sessions, pitch presentations and match-making sessions, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on these new dynamics in European societies. This seminar opens a space for practitioners and new stakeholders to better understand where social innovation is truly at, and what it means in the context of refugee inclusion. It gives participants the possibility to look beyond the “projects”, and explore the conditions and the partnerships we need to undertake successful social innovation for refugee inclusion.
