Urbanism and the Everyday

The Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (YTK) at the Aalto University School of Science and Technology hosted the sixteenth edition of the YTK/IFHP Summer School in Finland. YTK started this programme in 1995 under the auspices of the IFHP. The course was organised in cooperation with the cities of Helsinki, Turku and Jyväskylä. The Director of the Summer School is Professor Panu Lehtovuori from Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn.

The first days of the Summer School were spent in the Helsinki region. This part of the course consisted of lectures on Finnish planning, architecture and culture and on the theme of the course. There was also a full-day presentation on the City of Helsinki, including an excursion to recent planning projects.

In the second part of the Summer School the participants were divided into two groups and traveled to the cities of Turku and Jyväskylä where project planning and workshops took place. The field work included analysing the existing conditions of planning area and suggesting innovative and realistic improvements to the environments. Work was tutored by experienced planners and other experts of Urban Studies and final proposals were presented to the decision-makers, general public and the press.
