Building a Sustainable Global Future ~ Water and energy are critical for our current society and will be of increasing importance in the future. Climate change is forcing us to reassess our energy usage and will have real and substantial impacts on the water cycle. Solving the interlinked challenges of water, climate and energy in a sustainable manner is one of the fundamental goals of this generation.
Cities worldwide are facing rapid social, economic, environmental, technological and cultural changes such as: rapid urbanisation, aging of society, security issues, housing emergency, new solutions on mobility, integration of immigrants, food and water shortage, etc.
From 28 to 31 May, the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul-PUCRS in Porto Alegre will host the 2nd International Congress on Sustainability and Affordable Housing – CHIS 2012. The CHIS is organized by the Affordable Housing and Sustainability Research Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) and linked to its Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU). The Conference is an international scientific event that addresses issues related to public policies in the area of affordable housing and the driving principles of sustainability.
The Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) will hold its next Annual Congress in Ankara, Turkey, from 11 to 15 July 2012. The congress motto "Planning to Achieve/Planning to Avoid" is an umbrella for a wide spectrum of planning concerns, and explicitly expresses the variety of functions planning has to accommodate in the face of the material conditions of the modern world. Global warming, environmental and ecological degradation, depletion of natural resources, natural and man-made hazards, and economic crises affect our modes of production, consumption, and mobility patterns, demanding for new strategies in socio-spatial organization and conduct.
The International Urban Planning and Environment Association’s 10th Symposium will be held in Sydney, Australia during July 24-27, 2012. The overarching focus for UPE 10 is the Next City: Planning for a New Energy and Climate Future, and research or practice based papers will address socio-cultural, economic, ecological, and governance aspects of this theme.
