ISOCARP's 47th World Congress on Liveable Cities/Urbanising World - meeting the challenge to be held in Wuhan in the heart of China, between 24 and 28 October 2011 will explore and debate some fundamental issues.

IFHP's Spontaneous City Working Group hosted a one-day seminar on 14 October, and invited the international community in the Netherlands to share their research and personal and professional experiences about Spontaneous Cities. Programme included invited speakers, presentations, discussion and a short excursion.

The 1st Meeting of the new IFHP Council was held on 11 September 2011 from 10 am - 12 noon. Agenda and meeting notes can be found in the governance section of the Member's Area. All IFHP Members are invited to attend Council Meetings as observers.

IFHP’s 55th World Congress (The Impact of Housing & Planning on the Economy, 11-14 Sept. 2011) was held this year in Tallinn, Estonia - a 2011 European Capital of Culture. The Congress explored the embedded synergies between housing, planning, sustainability and the wider economy.

The Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (YTK) at the Aalto University School of Science and Technology hosted the sixteenth edition of the YTK/IFHP Summer School in Finland. YTK started this programme in 1995 under the auspices of the IFHP. The course was organised in cooperation with the cities of Helsinki, Turku and Jyväskylä. The Director of the Summer School is Professor Panu Lehtovuori from Estonian Academy of Arts, Tallinn.

This four-day conference attracted more than 250 researchers and professionals from a staggering 55 countries. Absolutely inspirational was the motivation of all present to break down the traditional disciplinary silos of planning and water management – and try to put them back together again in an integrated manner, recognizing that we can get much better outcomes as a result.

The 54th IFHP World Congress in Porto Alegre, Brazil, hosted by the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), was a great success, both in terms of content and professional and social contact.
28.-29. May 2010
Together with local authorities, IFHP organised a professional visit to Lausanne, Switzerland from the 28th to the 29th of May. Participants visited and learned about five exemplary projects of broad interest to professionals in planning, sustainable urban development and housing. The visit was accompanied by local experts from the city to ensure an optimal transfer of useful knowledge.

The Conference on Urban Policy was a 2-day conference that explored the political and practical aspects of urban policy in Europe and North Africa. The aim of the conference was not only to encourage the exchange of experiences in finding effective and innovative solutions to common urban problems, but also to encourage the establishment and strengthening of bilateral relations between cities on both sides of the Mediterranean. The focus on urban policy was meant, broadly, to look at the improvement of the physical urban environment and the improvement of quality of life/reduction of urban
