YTK, Land Use Planning and Urban Studies Group (http://ytk.aalto.fi/en) at Aalto University has organised annual Summer School on Urban Planning and Design under the auspices of IFHP for 17 years now. This traditional cooperation has brought a lot of benefits over the years – among others it has provided valuable educational experience for YTK since Summer School has been one of the few master level courses the research group has organised. Having concentrated mainly on research and further professional education, in the future YTK is focusing on graduate and post-graduate education based on academic research.
This semester YTK started a master’s programme in the field of Land Use Planning and Urban Studies. Aim is to provide more solid theoretical foundation as well as better understanding on challenges of land use planning for the future professionals of urban development. Understanding spatial dynamics of cities requires increasingly versatile set of approaches to built environment. YTK’s research and education subjects include land use planning theory, practices and systems; land use strategies and sustainable urban and regional development; participation and assessment in planning; and housing and living environments.
To strengthen department’s scientific profile YTK is recruiting another tenure track professor. The field of the professorship is based on the notion of land use planning as a technology of institutionalised social action for systematising knowledge needed in the management of changes in land use and urban structure, and for marshaling cooperative resources required for implementing changes.
The field of the professorship covers the institutional contexts of land use, planning knowledge and data systems concerning land use and urban structure, and processes of planning, assessment and implementation with participatory procedures and partnership arrangements.

Raine Mäntysalo is professor of strategic urban planning at Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Real Estate, Planning and Geoinformatics/YTK. Drawing from the tradition of pragmatist planning research, Mäntysalo's theoretical work concentrates on the methods of land use planning as strategic integration, the tools of interactional planning expertise, planning in the context of governance models and agonistic planning theory.
