Sustainia Award Ceremony Recap
Sustainia recently held a ceremony for the Sustainia Award, a global award honoring sustainable solutions and ideas. The process began with the nomination of 100 sustainable projects by Sustainia. The IFHP is a strategic partner of Sustainia.
For companies in every industry, corporate sustainability is a business practice as common place as social media networks. Despite it being a popular business ideology, urgent action is needed to make corporate sustainability a real force of change. Sustainia aims to do just that, and provide a new platform to communicate sustainability efforts and its impact on our daily lives.
The Sustainia100 represents 10 sectors and includes a wide range of entrants; from sustainable supermarkets and green container ships, to clean cooking technologies and solar home systems in Africa.
Before the ceremony began Georg Kell, the executive director of UN Global Compact, highlighted the lack of effective communication with consumers and other decision makers to be the key bottleneck when scaling up sustainability. Kell reiterated that Sustainia “holds all the ingredients of being a catalytic force to accelerate, inspire and bring to scale the many efforts that are already taking place”.
10 Finalists for the Sustainia awards were shortlisted and the public was responsible for determining the winners via online voting. The award for best community project went to Chicago Lakeside, a sustainable and smart-grid neighborhood development. The overall winner was Indigo solar solution, by British Azuri Technologies. The technology allows residents in developing countries to install small solar panels, and supply clean, low-cost electricity. 6000 families in Kenya, Malawi, Zambia and South Sudan have already adopted the Azuri solution.
Business development is at the heart of innovation and improvements to living standards. Business innovation sets the standard in increasing societies’ productivity, whether overcoming hardships to farming production or defeating infectious disease. Companies have the power to underline economies by conducting business practices with responsible and sustainable actions. With a rise in corporate sustainability, business leaders are acknowledging that responsible conduct, sustainable development and long-term business success are mutually reinforcing. Sustaina’s role will help bring accountability to the core values that are essential for building trust in markets, driving growth and spurring development in our communities.
