A Decade of Planning

The International Federation for Housing and Planning (IFHP) and The Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) are conducting a series of lectures as part of the Decade of Planning initiative. Well-known planners and other urban thinkers, both academics and practitioners, will actively participate over the course of our discussions in 2012 - 2013.

Bringing together politicians, community leaders, civil society organizations, businesses, and the media, the lecture series promotes planning as a discipline that can contribute to a better  quality of life, help find new tools of governance for urban structures, and function as an effective mediator between many stakeholders.

Planners - and planning as a discipline - face a range of contemporary and emerging challenges. We will discuss new approaches to these challenges, and the role of planning as a modern discipline, in our complex and dynamic society. Big name speakers will increase visibility and open opportunities to present planning in a more positive, constructive and attractive way.

The first two years of lectures forms part of the activities being organised within the framework of both the Silver Jubilee of AESOP (2012) and the Centenary of IFHP (2013).

Creating a new vision for planning by building on lessons from the past is the connecting element running through the whole series. Each lecture is followed by a discussion with the audience led by a professional moderator.

Our next guest will be:

Andreas Faludi on 'Twentieth Century Foundations of European Planning', June 2nd, 2012, Université Paris IV Sorbonne;

Earlier guests include:

Klaus Kunzmann on ‘Europe: 25 Years of Planning Education and Policies that Impact’, January 28th, 2012, Cappenberg Castle near Dortmund. Watch the lecture on AESOP's website

Stay tuned for more upcoming events.
