Singapore takes the lead in integrated urban solutions

Once again the IFHP is taking the lead to encourage governments and city leaders to come together at the IFHP Conference in Singapore May 30st to share and co-create solutions with an integrated approach to good urban governance.

"The future is not what it used to be, or rather what we tended to believe it is, namely, that the future is essentially unpredictable." J. Portugali.

The challenges facing urban planning are changing increasingly rapidly in the same way as technical, economic and social conditions. It is time for new approaches to managing cities, shifting focus from either a physical, social, or governance perspective to an integrated analysis; from looking at single project to thinking in terms of systematic processes and complexity.

The need for innovative and integrated urban solutions has always been imperative for Singapore. Given its small size and limited resources, Singapore has always adopted a forward-looking and integrated approach to urban planning and sustainable development to ensure a quality living environment for our people.

Highlighting the need for an integrated approach to urban planning, Mr Khoo Teng Chye, Executive Director of the Centre for Liveable Cities said:

"The interconnected nature of sustainable development calls for going beyond borders, both geographical and disciplinary, to coordinate strategies and make good decisions that benefit citizens. Problems are rarely contained within predefined jurisdictions such as one government agency or a single neighbourhood. This is a lesson that Singapore has learnt on its journey to urban sustainability.”

Other cities are also adopting a more holistic approach to achieve sustainable growth - a key reason why mayors and government leaders from around the world are converging in Singapore in May/June to share ideas and solutions to tackle urban challenges effectively.

The Conference will converge as a big add-on to Singapore’s World Cities Summit (WCS) 2014 from 1-4 June. The IFHP Conference is an official co-located event of the World Cities Summit 2014. Some 20,000 high-level delegates are expected to attend these days, including ministers, mayors, government and industry leaders, representatives of international organisations and academics.
