Next City: Planning for a New Energy and Climate Future

The International Urban Planning and Environment Association’s 10th Symposium will be held in Sydney, Australia during July 24-27, 2012.

UPE10 will provide a lively forum for international exchange between researchers and practitioners working on various dimensions of urban planning and environmental management, building on earlier. Symposia held in the US, the Netherlands, South Africa, the UK, Thailand, Germany and China.

The overarching focus for UPE 10 is the Next City: Planning for a New Energy and Climate Future, and research or practice based papers will address socio-cultural, economic, ecological, and governance aspects of this theme. Paper abstracts and full papers will be blind peer reviewed. Full papers may be selected for inclusion in an edited UPE book following the Symposium.

A PhD colloquium will precede the event, providing an opportunity for PhD students to build networks with international counterparts, prior to presenting their research at the Symposium.

The Symposium will be held at the historical University of Sydney campus.  Affordable accommodation in an historic University college will be available for those who book early.  Nearby attractions include the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, Bondi Beach as well as a number of significant urban renewal, waterfront revitalisation sites, and cultural precincts, a short walk or
bus ride away.

A selection of half day study tours will be included in the registration, and a post-symposium one day tour to the Sydney Blue Mountains National Park World Heritage Area will be available. There are numerous opportunities for post Symposium travel to other parts of Australia.
