Berlin Housing Lab

Berlin’s loss of publically owned land has led to a weighted dependence on the private sector to deliver the scale of social and affordable housing needed to avert the housing crisis. Currently, Berlin’s housing sector lacks cooperation between traditional and alternative stakeholders, leading to development prevention and delay. This was showcased in the proposal case of Berlin’s Tempelhof airport. Moreover, the lack of a divisive housing policy contrasts against Berlin’s stringent building regulations.

This lab proposes that Berlin can look to progressive measures such as a shared housing policy uniting all relevant stakeholders, alternative housing development finance mechanisms, and a housing sector cooperation platform.
